Algarve tourist tax calculator

Taxa turística (taxa municipal turística) for holiday lets in the Algarve, Portugal. Last checked 1 October 2026.

7 of the 16 Algarve councils charge a tourist tax: Albufeira, Faro, Lagoa, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António. It's a fixed amount per guest per night, usually €2 in high season and €1 in low season, for the first 5 or 7 nights. If you own an Alojamento Local (AL, a registered holiday let) in one of them, you must charge it to every guest and pay it to the council every month. Airbnb does not collect it in the Algarve. In Portugal Airbnb only collects it in Lisbon and Porto, so in the Algarve it's your job, for Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo and direct guests alike.

High season and low season are set by each council. A night is priced by its own date, so a stay that runs over 31 October pays €2 for the October nights and €1 for the November nights (our reading of the regulations, which set the rate for nights between two dates). The night limit is per guest per stay: after it, the rest of the stay is free.

Olhão: new rules (Regulamento 1267/2025) came into force on 13 December 2025 and we could not read the official text. Other sources say Olhão may now charge only from March to October, and one says the limit is 3 nights, not 5. Our figures use the 2023 rules. Check with the council before you rely on them.
Albufeira: the regulation doesn't set a day of the month for paying over the tax. In February 2026 the council switched off its old tourist tax platform, is setting up a new one and has started revising the rules. Charging still runs from 1 April, paid at check-in. Ask the council: taxa.turistica@cm-albufeira.pt.
Tavira: one blog says Tavira charges €1 or €2 a night. We found no regulation and every other source says it doesn't charge. Check with the council.
Vila Real de Santo António: some blogs say €1.50 in high season. We found no official text, so we use €1.

How it works for a holiday let owner

Lisbon and Porto

Lisbon charges €4 and Porto €3 per guest aged 13 and over per night, for up to 7 nights. Here Airbnb collects and pays it for its guests, but you still file a monthly return, report the Airbnb nights in their own box, and pay for Booking.com, Vrbo and direct guests yourself.
